After much thought I have finally come up with the list of books Caspian and Aurora will be reading for the upcoming school year. My heart’s desire is for them to love reading! There are some really great books out there, and unfortunately I don’t have enough time in the day to read them all to them (which I think would be their preference). So I have put together a list for each of them to read throughout the year. Some of the books are easier, some of them are more challenging. They are allowed to read the books in any order they choose and at any pace they desire, as long as they are finished by next August. This gives them about a month for each book. I am hoping this gives them more than enough time to not only read these books but also their reading selections for history and science. I did my best to tailor each selection to the interests of each child. Here is what they will be reading.

4th Grade

The Water Horse (Dick-King Smith)

Babe: The Gallant Pig (Dick-King Smith)

Lassie Come-Home (Eric Mowbray Knight)

The Railway Children (E. Nesbit)

2nd Grade

The Boxcar Children (Gertrude Chandler Warner)

My Father’s Dragon (Ruth Stiles Gannett)

Little House in the Big Woods (Laura Ingalls Wilder)

The Mouse and the Motorcycle (Beverly Cleary)

The Courage of Sarah Noble (Alice Dalgliesh)

The Whipping Boy (Sid Fleishman)

All-of-a-Kind Family (Sydney Taylor)

The Adventures of Happy Jack (Thorton Burgess)

Billy And Blaze (C.W. Anderson)

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain (Alice Dalgliesh)

“B” Is for Betsy (Carolyn Haywood)

Owls in the Family (Farley Mowat)

The Bobbsey Twins (Laura Lee Hope)

Last, but certainly not least, Moose and Little Bear will enjoy some great literature selections with Five in a Row! Since I am terrible about narrowing down all of the fun activities in the guides, we will be taking 2 weeks for each book instead of just 1 week. Here’s hoping for a great year of reading!

    • Oh good…it is always reassuring to know that someone else enjoyed our upcoming selections:) We read 21 Balloons a few years ago as a read aloud (not sure that anyone even remembers it) but I think Caspian will enjoy it!

  1. You’ve given me something to think about. I hadn’t considered requiring certain books. I want to have voracious, curious readers and am always questioning the best way to go about it. I am currently reading The Book Whisperer which talks about raising readers. Hmmmm…….off to think. 🙂
