Does it ever seem to you that true role models for us and our children just don’t exist when it comes to those in public positions? Just look at what happened in a baseball game last week when David Ortiz didn’t agree with a called strike and was ejected.
So we assume he would be punished for behavior like that, right? Nope. Nothing. What kind of message is this sending our children? My 9-year-old saw a piece of the footage and said to me “what if other kids were watching?” Unfortunately, I am sure they were. So are there any athletes worth the status of role models for our young children? The answer…YES!
Rob Rains has written a wonderful biography of many of the players and staff of the St. Louis Cardinals. This great read is called Intentional Walk. He profiles 18 different men involved in this baseball organization and showcases how they are able to live out their faith in a public arena. Every man has a great story behind how they came to be in the position they are currently in. Although they come from very different backgrounds, they are all instantly bonded by their faith in Jesus that comes before anything else.
These men go through the ups and downs in life that we all do. They have lived through great triumphs (promotions to the big leagues, making it to the playoffs) and times of pain and suffering (car accidents, illnesses, death of a teammate). But through it all their faith has been the strong foundation behind it all. It is truly heart-warming to hear of the Bible studies and talks of faith that go on between these men. They have an unbreakable bond in their faith.
Even though we are Cleveland Indians fans around here, we will definitely be rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals (unless, of course, they are playing the Indians…sorry guys, I hope you understand!). Intentional Walk is a book I will be recommending to all of the baseball fans in my life (including my husband and sons). If you need a renewal of your faith in humanity, I highly recommend this book!
