Not Just a Hearer But a Doer {a review}

If you have ever searched for a devotional to lead you into a deeper spiritual life of more than just hearing God’s word, then Not Just A Hearer But A Doer by Yolanda Shanks would be a great place to start!

Yolanda leads you through 31 days of truly living the way we are instructed to live. I have read through several devotionals that take you deeper into the Word, which is a great thing, but this one takes you further. And the best part for me…it is written with King James scriptures!

Each day’s devotion includes a story about the lesson. Then there is an observation of where we view this in scripture. The background of the scripture is then explained. The interpretation section helps define some of those words and phrases that we may not initially understand. Then comes the application…how to apply the scripture to your daily life. More scriptures relevant to the subject are listed, and then there is room for your personalized notes.

One of my favorite and most convicting readings is titled “Being Still”. How difficult this can be in our busy world! But we must never be too busy to spend time with the Lord! Yolanda uses Psalm 4:4 to teach this lesson. How often during our days do we “stand in awe” of all that God has given us? Probably not nearly often enough.

This book provides great reminders of how to live out our faith in the real world. Just imagine spending a month intentionally working toward showing your faith in a way that can lead others to Christ! What a powerful thing!
