Poppins Book Nook: Where in the World with “The 21 Balloons” {free printable and giveaway}

Poppins Book Nook (March 2014)
This month’s theme for the Poppins Book Nook is “Where in the World?” One of our favorite books immediately came to mind for us to use. The Twenty-One Balloons by Pene Du Bois fit this theme perfectly. Although we have read this book before, the kids were very excited to read it again!

The Twenty-One Balloons is an exciting story about a man, Professor William Waterman Sherman, who tries to go on a hot air balloon adventure. He creates a house attached to his balloon so he can be comfortable on his journey. Unforeseen circumstances find him on the island of Krakatoa. Everyone would assume that this island is uninhabited, but he finds twenty families living there. This island has a hidden secret stash of diamonds that keeps them all living there and working together to live the best life possible without letting the rest of the world know about their diamonds.

I will warn you, this story starts out a little bit slow.  It begins as the Professor is found floating in the ocean attached to twenty balloons (instead of the one he started his journey with). So if you decide to read it (which I highly recommend you do!) stick with it until the retelling of his journey begins. That is when all of the excitement starts and the story gets really interesting.

I thought this book brought up a great opportunity for my kids to practice their own storytelling skills, just like Professor William Waterman Sherman did. My kids seem to have a natural ability to tell stories and write pages and pages about them. But, to help them create their own story along the same theme of this book, I created a printable to guide them with the details of their story.

But there are so many more activities to go along with an adventurous book like this! Here are a few that we have done:

*Find your snack- Pretend like you are on a deserted island and you have to search for your food. You can either hide the ingredients needed to make a snack, or hide the snack that is already put together. Either way the kids are sure to have fun hunting down their snack!

*Treasure Hunt- This could tie in with the first activity or it could be something completely different. Create a treasure map for your children to follow to find the treasure. You could hide a new game or toy, or create a coupon that is good for something for you all to do together (like a family movie night or going out for ice cream).

*Build Your Home- This activity can be done inside or outside (we had to do it inside since it is still snowing outside…ugh). Give your children a group of supplies and see what type of structure they can build. If you can do this outside, you can use things like sticks and old sheets. If the weather is not cooperating and you need to stay inside, you could use PVC piping and blankets or sheets.

*Creating the Laws– Every country needs some laws to follow so that chaos doesn’t take over. Have your children write up the laws for their country. Which laws do they have in common with your country’s laws? Which are different?

We have had a lot of fun creating our own adventures inspired by this month’s theme. I just love bringing a book to life and making it real for the kids!

Are you ready to start an exploring adventure of your own?
